Aug. 19, 6 p.m. Cal Fire provided an update on the CZU August Lightning Complex Fires burning in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties Wednesday night, saying the group of blazes had burned more than 25,000 acres and remains zero percent contained as of 6 p.m.

Cal Fire Deputy Chief Jonathan Cox confirmed 20 single-family residences have been destroyed. "That is just the beginning of the damage," Cox said.

Cox said the fire is growing rapidly and many of the smaller blazes have combined into larger conflagrations.

The fire has been divided into a North Zone that includes San Mateo County where the communities of La Honda and Pescadero are threatened. and a South Zone encompassing fires in Santa Cruz that are threatening Bonny Doon, Ben Lomond and Felton.

Due to the heavy smoke, Cal Fire has been unable to operate complete aircraft operations and they don't expect these conditions to improve for 48 to 72 hours. The focus now is on protecting "life and property."

The fire conditions are constantly changing, and Cal Fire said it doesn't know "where evacuations will lead next."

If you are asked to evacuate, Cal Fire said, "Get out, do not hesitate, do not wait."

You can find the press conference here.

Aug. 19, 3:05 p.m. Additional evacuation warnings were issued from Cal Fire Wednesday afternoon for the CZU August Lightning Complex.

The areas west of Highway 9 to Empire Grade, and south from Bear Creek Road to Felton (including Ben Lomond), were added to a longer list of evacuation warnings issued earlier Wednesday morning (the full warning list is below).

Aug. 19, 2:20 p.m. San Jose State University cancelled its classes for Wednesday due to the air quality from the fires, and will decide at 6 p.m. whether classes will continue for Thursday or will be cancelled as well.

According to a press release, SJSU is closing all of its buildings with the exception of its residence halls and University Housing Services, dining commons
and the Student Health Center.

Students and faculty will be updated on the status of campus closures via email, or can check in with the university's Twitter account, @SJSU.

A group of large fires tore through a dry landscape in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties overnight, triggering evacuations, threatening homes and pushing suffocating smoke into the Santa Clara Valley.

The CZU August Lightning Complex is named for the blazes that were sparked amid the rash of thunderstorms that moved across California early this week.

A Cal Fire spokesperson told KCBS Radio Wednesday morning that on Tuesday there were about 22 fires and at least 20 new ones sparked overnight.

As of Wednesday morning, the blaze had burned 10,000 acres and there was zero containment, Cal Fire said in its status report. While no structures have been destroyed, 6,000 are threatened.
