Walter Scott: One buck is the star of many trail camera photos - West Central Tribune

During the past few weeks, in my spare time, I have been brush-cutting the trails in the timber to keep down the weeds and rose bushes. It makes for a more pleasant ride when driving around checking the wildlife, and the wildlife seems to enjoy having clear places to walk as they go about their daily routines.

Last week, my wife and I put three cameras out on the trails to see what was moving out there. Sunday, we drove around, switching out memory cards and checking the numbers of pictures on each camera. We can only tell how many pictures the camera has taken until we get home to actually look at what has passed by.

The first camera had taken eight pictures. It was not in the best location, but I was hoping for more photos.

The second camera had 26 pictures on it. That is more than what I expected to be on all of them.

The third camera said it had taken 234 pictures. I found this hard to believe.

We were sure something was wrong with the camera or a leaf blowing in the breeze was setting off the motion detector. I have had this happen before where a strategically placed weed would trigger the sensor every time it was hit by a wind gust.

One time, I ended up with over a thousand pictures of a weed moving back and forth. It takes some time to delete that many boring pictures.

We had a pleasant ride around the farm and headed back to the house to check the memory sticks on the computer.

The first camera had one picture of us during setup, six does passing by and one picture of us coming back to change the memory stick. Nothing that was very exciting.

The second camera was not much better. The two pictures of my wife and I going and coming with pictures in between of does, does and fawns, fawns, and one spike buck. That was rather disappointing.

When the last camera loaded, I saw it did indeed have 234 actual pictures. Needless to say, there were over a hundred pictures of does and fawns, but there were also bucks in assorted sizes, a coyote and several turkeys.

The attached buck was on the camera several times. One morning he stood in front of the camera for about 15 minutes, striking different poses, and getting his picture taken every 30 seconds. It was though he knew he was getting his picture taken and was proud of the fine set of antlers he was growing.

We will definitely keep a camera at that location until well into winter. It seems to be the crossroads of the farm where everything passes by during the week.

It will be interesting to watch this buck as his antlers continue to grow and he fills out before the rut. He should be an impressive animal by bow season. He was only one of the many deer that had their pictures taken, but he was the biggest one we got this week.
