A Labor Day Weekend Like No Other: Many Are Celebrating But ‘Keeping It Low Key’ - CBS New York

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – It’s a Labor Day like no other.

Nevertheless, people across our area are taking advantage of the long weekend, to squeeze out as much summer as they can.

Labor Day weekend picnics, parties and parades are all scaled way back, or going virtual.

“Hey, it’s the last weekend we get the chance. Let’s just go for it. So, meeting up with friends, socially distant with mask,” said Emma Inguva.

The Inguvas, from the Upper West side, brought their cooler to Jones Beach, where the mood is a bittersweet one, reported CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan. It’s a last hurrah to summer and hello to an upended school year.

“I’ll be going to the 7th grade and my school has a mix of online and in person,” said 12-year-old Ashley Inguva.

Many are reflecting on the meaning of Labor Day, celebrating the contributions workers have made to the well-being of our nation.

“Their contribution to society, and to democracy – to our way of life,” said Henryk Jakubowski of Queens.

“A big shout out to everybody who is achieving their goals, that is getting one percent better. Time to come out and be the best they can be,” said Shonteay Lovell of Brooklyn.

“A day to celebrate the hardworking stiffs of the country,” said Dennis Murphy.

The Wongs of Forest Hills have a labor day kite tradition at Eisenhower Park.

“It’s a family time and we’re just trying to do our best to get out a little bit more,” she told CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan. “With the pandemic and everything, we were stuck at home.”

Tennis matches are back on the courts, and splash parks open for man’s best friend. Golf is in full swing.

Rachel Lachita of East Meadow is an empty nester for the first time this Labor Day. She’ll be playing in golf tournaments.

“My children are all grown up, so,” she said.

“This year, it’s just hanging with the family, keeping it low key,” said Chris Cohen.

It’s a time to thank our workforce and give hope, says Rep. Kathleen Rice.

“There are more unemployed Americans now than there have been since the Great Depression. Still an enormous problem,” Rice said.
