Many Baltimore Ravens kneel during national anthem before opener against Cleveland Browns - PennLive

BALTIMORE — More than half of the Baltimore Ravens' players, including MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, knelt during the playing of the national anthem before Sunday’s season-opening game against the Cleveland Browns.

Owner Steve Bisciotti released a statement shortly afterward saying he supported the action of his players.

In the wake of George Floyd’s death under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer in May and the shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin, athletes across sports have engaged in demonstrations against racism and social injustice. At M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday, the phrase “end racism” is stenciled in the back of one end zone; “it takes all of us” is behind the other.

Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first put the spotlight on national anthems in NFL stadiums when he sat and then knelt in 2016 to protest police brutality. Kaepernick, who led his team to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season, has not returned to an NFL roster since opting out of his contract with San Francisco in March 2017.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh and safety Chuck Clark said Friday the team planned to allow all players to do what they wished during the national anthem.

While many Ravens knelt, a smaller handful of Browns players took a knee. Defensive end Myles Garrett was one of the them.

About 15 minutes before the anthem, the Ravens showed a video during the playing of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” a song celebrating Black Americans. During the song, the Browns were not on the field. One Ravens player, Marcus Peters, went into the locker room for it.

The rest of Baltimore’s team remained on the field, and owner Steve Bisciotti joined them. Two players, cornerback Marlon Humphrey and outside linebacker Matthew Judon, knelt.
