How many Alabamians are ahead of you in line for the vaccine? - AL.com

On Monday, Jan. 18, Alabama is set to begin the next phase of the vaccine rollout, for the first time encouraging general members of the public, if they are old enough, to sign up.

The state will officially enter phase1b, not entirely, but they will start accepting two groups in 1b. Those are people 75 and older and first responders, like police and firefighters.

The rest of 1b, including essential workers and people in group homes, will come next. So might people over 65. There were in the third wave, group 1c, but the CDC has recommended all states move faster to vaccinate anyone over 65.

But just how many people are in each of those groups in Alabama?

How many people are in each vaccine group?

Being part of a specific group - such as frontline workers or people 75 and older - may put you closer to the front of the line for the coronavirus vaccine. Here's an estimate of how many people are in each group. | Graphic by Ramsey Archibald

Within each phase of Alabama Department of Public Health’s vaccination distribution plan are specific groups. The state estimates there are nearly 347,000 people who are already eligible for the vaccine under phase 1a, which includes medical workers and people living or working in nursing homes.

ADPH estimates there are roughly 350,000 people in Alabama 75 years old or older, and another 501,000 between the ages of 65 and 74. The state says phase 1b of the vaccine rollout, including essential workers, includes 783,000 people - including around 40,000 people living or working in congregant settings, which includes group homes and homeless shelters.

Phase 1c will include another 775,000 people, including essential workers. And the state estimates there are nearly 1.9 million people in Alabama with one or more of the following conditions: Obesity, diabetes, COPD, heart disease, or chronic kidney disease.

If you add all those numbers up, that equals an estimated 4.7 million Alabamians who will be eligible to receive a vaccine before the state can begin to turn to everyone else. But the number isn’t actually that high. That state is home to only around 4.9 million people, and the total is inflated since people can be in more than one group - i.e., a police officer with kidney disease or a surgeon who is 66 years old.

So far progress has been slow, as Alabama has only just vaccinated 2 percent of the population - the lowest rate in the nation. But officials expect things to speed up as the tiers expand and more people can sign up.
