Statue of many limitations
In reply to Democratic destruction (June 25), I beg your pardon, but I think you have it all wrong.
Don’t blame Democrats for tearing down statues. Blame the lack of compassion toward African Americans all over the world who are tired of being treated unkindly due to the color of their skin.
It has taken many years of unfair treatment to have come to this demise. This is such a sad time for our country, so let’s not blame everything on a political party but on years of horrible treatment of Black Americans. Why can’t we finally come together as a nation and be kind and respectful of other? We are all living on earth together, and we should be free to live peacefully together.

Supporting the cancer community
As our leaders work to address the devastating impacts of COVID-19, I hope they keep the nonprofits that have been so critical to the health of Californians in mind. Many organizations in our charitable community in the Coachella Valley have taken a devastating financial hit during this crisis, including ones very important to me: the American Cancer Society (ACS) and its advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (CAN).
When my wife was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, ACS was there for us with services and all-important research and drug therapy trials. After she died 10 years ago, I volunteered for ACS CAN, which makes the voices of cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones heard in the halls of government.
As a larger nonprofit, the American Cancer Society cannot access much of the relief that was part of the original CARES Act. I’m urging our lawmakers on Capitol Hill to ensure the next stimulus package includes relief for nonprofits with more than 500 employees and further strengthens the charitable giving tax deduction.
Cancer hasn’t stopped, so neither can we. Please help support ACS and the millions who rely on its services, from counseling to research. Be the difference.

Unemployment statistics
Someone needs to fact check Dan Walters. According to him (June 26), our current jobless rate of 15.9% is “well over the highest rate seen during the Great Depression.”
Unemployment in the Great Depression was 25%. Last time I checked, an unemployment rate of 25% is “well over” the current 15.9%.

In your own yard, please
A reply to Joe Schwarz from Pentictonm B.C. (June 26): I'm making the assumption that you are a winter visitor to the Coachella Valley. As such, you are one of the estimated 450,000 Canadians who visit each year. We consider you our guest, and as your hosts we welcome you. I doubt that you would insult your friends as a guest in their homes as you did to us.
Canadians enjoy a valuable reputation as friendly and polite. Your comments are neither, and probably your fellow citizens would agree.
Please refrain from ugly, demeaning and insulting screeds about our country's president and his supporters. Constructive criticism is welcome and advances the narrative.
Your letter did nothing of the sort.
Besides, Canada has its own issues with the current leadership, so clean up your own backyard first. FYI: I am Canadian and a 52-year resident of the United States and proud of it.

Voter fraud?
I had to laugh at the fellow from Palm Springs who said there was very little voter fraud in the U.S. He obviously isn't aware of the national watchdog group Judicial Watch that has filed lawsuits against five states, including, of course, California.
Judicial Watch claims that there are 2.5 million voters more than the population of 378 counties in the USA, 19 of them in California. They are suing Los Angeles County also for the fact they have not cleaned up their voter registers. It was found that there were 1.6 million more voters on the rolls than the eligible voting population. "Mail-in" balloting would allow fraudulent printing of ballots. After all, they forge 100 dollar bills all the time; why not a simple printed ballot?
And since the Democrats allow "ballot harvesting" in this state, can you imagine the dirty tricks that could be played?
