As many as 300 attended Trump fundraiser at Bedminster, attendee says - NJ.com

President Donald Trump’s fundraiser in Bedminster on Thursday drew as many as 300 people, an attendee said, for an event that has fallen under scrutiny given Trump’s stunning announcement hours later that he has tested positive for the coronavirus.

John Sette, a former chairman of the Morris County Republican Party, said Trump spoke outdoors from the steps of the main entrance to his golf club, with attendees wearing masks and socially distancing. Sette estimated he was about 100 feet from Trump.

“The president looked 100% normal, spoke great,” Sette said. “He spoke about 15 minutes and took questions for an hour.”

Early Friday morning, Trump announced on Twitter that he and his wife, Melania, have tested positive for coronavirus. Trump’s decision to hold the fundraiser despite knowing he had potentially been exposed has sparked criticism.

Sette said he does not regret attending the event, and was not among the highest-paying donors who were granted a meet-and-greet with Trump inside.

“I spoke to my doctor this morning and he said, ‘Don’t worry about it,'" Sette said. “'If you feel sick, call me.'”

Sette said attendees had their temperatures taken beforehand. He said he was surprised at how few faces he recognized, saying he has been in politics for four decades and didn’t see anyone he knew.

“All I know is I went and I had a good time and I’m glad I went,” Sette said. “It was great event and I was glad I was there.”

Tickets for the event were as high as $250,000 for a roundtable meeting, photo opportunity and reception with the president, according to a Trump campaign announcement. The Washington Post reported that Trump was in close contact with dozens of people.

New Jersey comedian Joe Piscopo told NJ Advance Media that the event was held outdoors and many attendees were masked. He said Trump “looked stronger than I’ve ever seen him” as the president gave a speech from a podium and answered questions from the crowd for about 45 minutes.
