New Jersey voters have already cast 321,897 ballots in the presidential election as of Monday, according to data from the secretary of state’s office.
The total represents a small fraction, less than 6%, of the more than 5.9 million people registered to vote by mail so far amid the coronavirus pandemic, and Monday was the deadline for county clerks to finish mailing ballots.
Democrats far outnumber Republicans in New Jersey, and the 190,967 registered Democrats who have already voted is almost triple the 64,377 Republicans who have cast ballots, although the data does not show how people voted. State officials may not begin counting ballots until ten days before Election Day.
There were also more than 64,800 independent votes cast.
Statewide as of Oct. 5, there were more than 2.3 million Democrats registered in New Jersey, more than 1.3 million registered Republicans and about 2.1 million unaffiliated, according to the data.

The state’s most competitive Congressional race is for South Jersey’s 2nd District, where party-switching incumbent Rep. Jeff Van Drew faces a strong Democratic challenger.
The district is spread over Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties. More Democrats (4,059) have voted in that region so far than Republicans (3,656), although early turnout is low.
Only 51 people have cast ballots in Salem and none from Atlantic, and more votes in one area may only mean that a county clerk mailed ballots sooner than another.
In the 3rd District, rookie Democrat Rep. Andy Kim is fighting to keep his seat in a conservative area made up of parts of Burlington and Ocean.
More Democrats (19,819) have also voted in those counties then Republicans (15,151).
The rush to send every voter a ballot has given election officials new headaches, and they’ve asked residents receiving duplicate ballots and ballots for dead people or those that have moved to report the error. Republicans have filed two lawsuits to alter New Jersey’s mail-in ballot plan, but Election Day is a month out.
Residents may still register to vote until Oct. 13, and election boards can accept ballots a week after Election Day as long as they’re postmarked by Nov. 3.
