Syracuse, N.Y. – The streak continues.
Not that anyone is keeping records, but the streak of consecutive weeks with a question about Jimmy Boeheim in Mike’s Mailbox stayed alive this week. In a big way.
The mailbox was flooded with queries about the Cornell senior who made a bit of news this week.
So here we go:
Q: If Jimmy Boeheim transfers to Syracuse and plays his last year of eligibility, would he still be able to use his graduate transfer year of eligibility?
Fady K.
Mike: My email inbox practically exploded when the news broke that Cornell senior Jimmy Boeheim, along with two of his Big Red teammates, had entered their names in the NCAA’s transfer portal.
Most of the questions centered around whether Jimmy would transfer to Syracuse, when and for how long? (His father, for those who don’t know, happens to be the head coach at Syracuse, and his younger brother is a junior guard for the Orange.)
First, we don’t even know if Jimmy and the other Cornell players are definitely going to transfer. They could return to Cornell next season as long as they don’t graduate this year, which they could delay by simply withdrawing from school for the spring semester or adding a second major to their studies.
Entering the portal just gives them a chance to get a read on what opportunities are out there at other schools.
But let’s say Jimmy Boeheim does transfer.
It’s unlikely that he would be eligible this season. Even though the Ivy League canceled the men’s basketball season, he still would need a waiver from the NCAA. I don’t know if the NCAA would grant a mid-year exception to the residency rule, even in a year that’s been impacted by the coronavirus.
What he could do is finish his degree requirements and earn his Cornell degree in May and then transfer.
He could play immediately in the 2021-22 season at Syracuse (or any other school) as a grad transfer.
And since the NCAA has granted all winter sports athletes an extra year of eligibility, he also could play in the 2022-23 season as well.
Q: When was the last time Syracuse had this many days between the last game of one season and the first game of the next season?
Bill N.
Mike: This is a great question and it sent me back over 45 years into the SU record books.
Syracuse’s last game was its 81-53 win over North Carolina on March 11 in the ACC tournament. The Orange is scheduled to open this season on Nov. 27 against Bryant.
That’s a span of 261 days. Frankly, it seems longer.
The last time Syracuse fans had to wait more than 261 days to see the Orange play was from the end of the 1973-74 season to the start of the 1974-75 season.
On March 9, 1974, Syracuse lost to Oral Roberts in the first round of the 1974 NCAA tournament.
Syracuse’s next game was on November 30, 1974, at Buffalo. That’s a span of 266 days.
There were other years that came close – 260 days between 1980 and ’81 and also 1979 and ’80 – but you have to go all the way to the days of Jim Lee and Rudy Hackett to match a hiatus as long as the current one.
Q: Which school has the rowdiest and most obnoxious fans?
Ray H.
Mike: It’s hard to deny that Duke’s fans are pretty rowdy, but when Jamie Dixon had Pittsburgh rolling I would have put the Oakland Zoo right up there with the Cameron Crazies.
Rowdy is different than obnoxious. I love a good, rowdy crowd. However, I hate obnoxious fans.
There have only been a few times that I thought fans were truly being obnoxious. I can recall incidents in which language or behavior that’s not fit for print happened at DePaul, Providence and North Carolina State. I’m not talking about an individual. These incidents were a group effort.
But I’d hasten to add that those were one-time events and I wouldn’t label the fans at those schools as necessarily obnoxious.
Q: I’m interested in your chili recipe. What kind of meat do you use?
William R.
Mike: So I’ve mentioned on Twitter that I am rather proud of my chili-making skills. I can’t divulge all of my recipe’s secrets, but I will offer one tip.
I use a combination of ground beef and Italian sausage in my chili. It’s a 2-to-1 ratio, the benchmark for a point guard’s assist-to-turnover. So two pounds of ground beef for one pound of sausage. It’s a great mixture and really adds to the flavor.
