New Greenwich Civic Center to serve ‘as many community needs as possible’ - Greenwich Time

GREENWICH — Planners working on a new Eastern Greenwich Civic Center say the proposed structure will include substantial amount of space for nonprofits and local arts organizations, as well as athletics.

Updating progress on the project before the town Planning and Zoning Commission, Scott Johnson, co-chairman of Eastern Greenwich Civic Center Committee, said a recent survey of residents helped identify community desires. That survey, he said, helped shape the latest plan that “falls withing the realm of what’s realistic and what the community wants.”

The latest proposal makes the facility a “community center” as well as a place for basketball and other sports, said Alan Monelli, superintendent of Building Construction and Maintenance, at the P&Z Commission meeting Tuesday. He told the planning commissioners that there would be a substantial amount of “multi-purpose” space in the building that could be used by arts groups, educational organizations and youth organizations.

Commission Chairwoman Margarita Alban said “developing a top class facility and trying to address as many community needs as possible” is a good strategy.

Liz Peldunas from the Riverside Association said her neighborhood organization is in favor of “something that is ... multipurpose and multi-generational.”

The proposal is to demolish the existing 31,765 square-foot two-story structure on Harding Road. It would be replaced with a new one-story building that measures 35,482 square feet.

The latest plans also add more trees and include better safety features in the parking lot, Monelli said.

Additional review on the proposal at town committees is continuing.

The project to replace the Eastern Civic Center has been a long time coming. Town officials began exploring the possibility in 1999.

“It’s been a while,” Alban said at last month’s commission meeting.

The existing shelter was built in 1950 for use as a recreation center by Electrolux employees. It was acquired by the town in 1966.
