Giving Fund: Many local families are in need this holiday season - Greenwich Time

Times are tough due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving some residents unable to pay for their basic needs — rent, food and childcare.

But generous members of the community can make a difference by making a donation to the Giving Fund campaign this holiday season.

The Greenwich Time and the Stamford Advocate are providing readers with the opportunity to help their neighbors in need through the Giving Fund, in partnership with Family Centers and Person-to-Person, two area nonprofits.

Each case in the Giving Fund includes an estimated dollar amount that would help a local person or family tackle everyday costs. Every dollar donated to the Giving Fund goes directly to the people in the stories, which are published every Thursday and Sunday throughout the holiday season.

An anonymous local donor has made a pledge to match dollar-for-dollar every donation made to the Giving Fund, up to $30,000 through Christmas Day, making your donation worth that much more.

The names have been changed to protect the participants’ privacy. Here are the stories of 15 neighbors in need:

CASE #360: Gregory and Lisa have chronic mental health disabilities and are struggling to live on low fixed incomes. Each month, they choose which bills to pay in full and which to only partially pay. They are now behind in their rent. A gift of $775 would help them catch up and give them peace of mind for the holidays.

CASE #361: Conner is a 19-year-old graduate of Greenwich High and student at Pace University, on track to make the Dean’s List. During the COVID outbreak, he lost his job and became homeless. He has no family support as he pays his own way through college. He is having difficulty finding work due to the pandemic and his busy class schedule as he works on a five-year track to a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree in secondary education. A gift of $500 would allow Connor to purchase necessities to make it through the spring semester.

CASE #362: P, a mother of four children, is hardworking but this year she has been hit hard. In April, P lost her job, in June her mother passed away, and in August P was diagnosed with cervical cancer. P is following her treatments, but she is finding it difficult to keep up with her household expenses. A gift of $800 would help P to pay basic bills and provide some relief during the holiday season.

CASE #363: N is a working mother who supports four girls and has a baby on the way. Two years ago, her eldest daughter became permanently disabled due to a mental health condition. Her second daughter was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. N is worried because her second daughter’s ongoing treatment consumed the little savings she had. A gift of $800 would help M enjoy a peaceful holiday season, while waiting for the new baby.

CASE #364: J is a single working mother of one who was recently diagnosed with level 3 ovarian cancer. J is working part time remotely, but she is finding it difficult to take care of her 5-year-old son while she goes for her treatments. A gift of $800 would help pay for childcare during the next two months.

CASE #365: Sandra’s husband, 34, was admitted to Stamford Hospital for urgent induction chemotherapy for leukemia. He was there for three months, and he continues to receive chemotherapy and radiation. Sandra has two small children and works at a local fast food restaurant. Without her husband’s income and with her children learning remotely, it has been difficult for Sandra to pay her rent and bills on time. A grant of $1,000 would allow her to pay her rent while her husband focuses on his health.

CASE #366: Marco lost his job as a busboy when his restaurant closed because of COVID-19. He took other jobs, however, his immigration status makes it hard for him to get a job in any industry except hospitality. Additionally, Marco was admitted to Stamford Hospital in September for 10 days and is unable to work while still undergoing evaluations. A grant of $1,000 would help Marco’s family pay their rent, while they pursue other sources of income.

CASE #367: Michelle was working full time when she was diagnosed with a tumor under her armpit. The tumor required surgery and, as a result, she will be out of work for one month. Michelle is unable to pay her rent for December. A grant of $1,000 would help cover living expenses until she is able to go back to work.

CASE #368: Alan has been required to quarantine for 14 days due to COVID. He does not have sick pay to cover his expenses for the time he is unable to work. A grant of $1,000 would help secure his place of living while he recovers and prepares to return to work again.

CASE #369: Fatima is a mother of three children under the age of 5 who is unemployed. Fatima fears that her husband could lose his job if there is another spike in COVID-19 on top of her worries that they still cannot cover their expenses. Her savings are running low and finding a job has been difficult. With a gift of $375, Fatima and her family could cover utility expenses and food costs this holiday season.

CASE #370: Elizabeth is a mother of three who stopped working as a housekeeper at the end of her pregnancy and the start of COVID. She and her family are facing a hard time financially, with expenses escalating and income declining. Elizabeth’s husband is a construction worker whose jobs have been paused. A gift of $500 would help this family cover rent and food costs.

CASE #371: Celeste is a mother of four who lost her job toward the end of her pregnancy. Her husband lost both of his jobs for a few months, until he found a new temporary job. She is worried about providing for their family because they can barely make ends meet. A gift donation of $500 would greatly help them during this holiday season.

CASE #372: Daniela and her husband are parents to two girls. They do not have many relatives or a support system since arriving in Greenwich recently. They faced tough times when they were both unemployed due to COVID. Her husband returned to work, and they have been prioritizing catching up on past due bills. With a gift of $400, this family could cover their utility and rent expenses this holiday season.

CASE #373: Lilian is a single mother of two who works around her son’s schedule to provide income and spend time with them. Lilian, a hairstylist, is working fewer hours due to COVID-19 as she follows CDC guidelines. With a gift donation of $500, Lilian could cover her utilities and food expenses or a portion of her rent during the holidays.

CASE #374: Amanda is a mother of three who is expecting a son in the next few months. She recently separated from her partner, leaving her alone to provide for her family. Amanda has a number of physical health problems that limit her mobility. She is due to undergo back surgery after giving birth. With a gift of $500, she could cover food expenses and purchase essentials for her baby on the way.
