ROAD CONDITIONS: Ice reported on many Houston-area roads - KPRC Click2Houston

Ice is being reported on some Houston-area roadways as wintry weather moves through the region.

A major winter storm is bringing freezing rain, sleet, snow and cold temperatures to many parts of Texas over the next several days. The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings or watches for most Texas counties. The Houston area was forecast to have its coldest temperatures in 30 years.

Amid the winter weather blast, officials are urging Texans to avoid getting on the road.

“Lots of ice and snow across our state this morning with more to come,” said James Bass, Texas Department of Transportation Executive Director. “If you can stay home, stay home. If you absolutely must drive, SLOW DOWN and drive to conditions with headlights on - to see and be seen by others.”

Several crashes were reported in the Houston area early Sunday morning.

“Please slow down,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez on social media. “Multiple minor crashes have already been reported since about 6 am this morning and conditions are only going to deteriorate. The crashes were all on 290, in both directions from about SH-99 to 2920. In all of those crashes, cars slid into walls.”

• Missouri City officials said the following roads are closed: Northbound and Southbound Hwy. 6 shut down at Fort Bend Tollway, US 90 A overpass by Texas Parkway, Fort Bend Toll Road overpass by Highway 6 and Highway 288 ramp to Beltway 8.
• Sam Houston Parkway is closed from North Freeway to Tomball Parkway, according to Harris County deputies.
• Harris County deputies said the Hardy Toll Road is closed from I-610 to I-45.
• HCTRA said Hardy Toll Road is closed between I-45 and Beltway 8.
• Pasadena police said SH 225 is closed in both directions from Scarborough Lane to Beltway 8.
• La Porte officials said SH-146 southbound is closed at the Fred Hartman Bridge because of ice on the road.
• HCTRA said both directions of Sam Houston Tollway between Ella Boulevard and Southwest Freeway (I-69/US-59) are closed because of ice.
• TxDOT said Sunday night that both the northbound and southbound SH 288 connectors to Interstate 610 were closed because of ice.
• On Sunday evening, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office tweeted that Grand Parkway was closed at the Katy Freeway because of icy conditions.
• Katy police said Cane Island Parkway Bridge over Interstate 10 was also being closed.
