Just about every day we’re alerted to another new and imminent danger due to high temperatures resulting from climate change. Tuesday’s warning was headlined “Study: Increasing tree mortality linked to rising temps” in the Times-Call. Most blame CO2 from the combustion of fossil fuels for the high temperatures but I wonder how many have taken the time to see when record high temperatures first occurred across our country.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has a listing of the record high temperatures in each state and when they first occurred. The official record high temperatures in 36 states (72% of them) occurred prior to 1940 and in two states before 1900. Only two of the 50 states have record high temperatures that occurred after the year 2000.
The atmospheric CO2 level in 1900 was about 296 ppm; in 1940 it was about 311 ppm and in 2020 414 ppm. If CO2 is the “control knob” for atmospheric temperature levels, shouldn’t more of the record highs be nearer to 2020?
