Re “Leaving Hospital, Trump Minimizes Virus Risk” (front page, Oct. 6):
I have never witnessed such recklessness by a leader as I witnessed in Donald Trump’s behavior on Monday. During a pandemic that has killed more than 210,000 in the United States, the infected president, who should be quarantining, tweeted: “Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life.” Later he took off his mask while standing on the White House balcony after returning from the hospital.
His gesture clearly showed contempt for others, for the 210,000 dead, for science, for the vulnerable and for responsible behavior. This man does not deserve any supporters.

So many have expressed grave concern over the fact that President Trump says not to fear the coronavirus. This concern is misplaced. Clearly we should respect but not fear the coronavirus. Inducing fear is an irrational, often dangerous, response. We need good, solid, logical, cleareyed plans and actions. Advocating that we should fear this disease is counterproductive.

“Don’t be afraid of Covid,” the president says. “Don’t let it dominate your life.” As a mother of a 39-year-old daughter who remains so fatigued three months out from a positive coronavirus test that she can only work half time, I have different advice.
Be afraid, be very afraid, because you cannot know whether and how it may dominate your life. And keep that in mind when you vote.

While it is disheartening to see the president of the United States come down with Covid-19, something truly irks me about the disparity between the medical care immediately available to him versus the general public.
He is someone who flouted all the experts’ advice by taking undue risks and cavalierly exposing not only himself but all of those around him to contracting this deadly disease. He encouraged the populace to ignore science and recklessly take those same risks, stating repeatedly that the virus is a hoax while all the time knowing it was dangerous and often deadly.
Yet when he comes down with the virus, he has immediate access to the best care in the world, with cutting-edge practitioners and medications at his disposal. Whereas for the rest of the many of us who respect the disease and do everything we can to remain safe from it, we have to find a way to take a test and wait sometimes days or even weeks for results. If we discover days after our test that our condition becomes dire, we don’t have ready access to these cutting-edge medications and specialists.
We the public should be very angry (I am) about a president who downplays this virus as a hoax, yet when it strikes him through his reckless actions and inactions, immediately gets to jump the proverbial line to gain access to world-class care for himself.

What about the housekeepers and other support staff in the White House who test positive? Will they be admitted to the top Washington hospitals and receive monoclonal antibody treatment? Will their treatment be paid for by the government? And what about their families? Their neighbors?
Has President Trump spared a minute to think about them? It just makes one want to cry …

Had my mother, or any of the 210,000 Covid victims in this country, been fortunate enough to have instantaneous intervention, a large medical team and “state-of-the-art treatment,” perhaps she would have overcome Covid-19 and be with us today. So with all due respect to the president, if he has no helpful advice, maybe he should try keeping quiet.
