Five must-reads before kickoff:
* Mel Tucker has a few more dollars in his pocket and Michigan State hopes it will have him as coach for a long time to come. Tucker signed a new 10-year, $95 million contract on Wednesday to make him the second-highest paid college football coach behind only Alabama’s Nick Saban.
* Michigan State’s injury issues have piled up: it could be without its top two wide receivers, its left tackle, and others on Saturday. Kenneth Walker III is also banged up. Coaches are looking to a host of reserves to step up and help end the season strong.
* Tucker took a rare moment to address outside expectations with his team this week following the team’s 49-point loss to Ohio State. He pointed out that while the Spartans have already exceeded by far what others expected them to do (their over/under win total was four) they’re also “not playing with the house’s money.”
* How much Walker is available, how Michigan State’s pass defense responds and how many fans are in the stands are among Matt Wenzel’s five things to watch for Saturday.
* Connor Heyward is among Michigan State’s players who will take the field for senior day on Saturday, and he has one of the most interesting stories: a player who entered the transfer portal, withdrew, switched positions and became an NFL prospect.
