Many different weather elements impacting our region starting today and continuing through the weekend - WVVA TV

A low pressure system is slowly starting to approach our area. In front of the system we are witnessing rain showers and even a potential along the eastern slopes for some freezing rain/sleet to start off the morning. Right now, surface temperatures for the majority of the area are above freezing, but a few areas can see temperatures drop to right below that freezing mark.

A Winter Weather Advisory is issued until 1 PM for Giles, eastern Greenbrier and Monroe counties mainly due to the potential for slick roadways. Ice accumulation totals of 0.01-0.05" (trace amounts) is possible.

Winds will continue to increase especially into this afternoon. Wind gusts could exceed 40 MPH. A Wind Advisory has been issued for Tazewell, Bland, Wythe, Mercer, Summers and Western Greenbrier counties until 6 PM.

A Wind Advisory has been issued for Northwest Pocahontas and Eastern Fayette counties until 10 PM tonight.

Rain is already creeping in for the majority of the area and will continue to be widespread all day. Heavy downpours are expected at some times, so flooding is a potential. More rain looks geared to hit the eastern slopes (east of I-77). Rain totals look anywhere from half an inch to exceeding an inch in some isolated spots.

Having gusty winds and a potential for ponding water on the roadways could lead to power outages and downed trees. Overnight rain should become more scattered in nature where pockets of dry air will be present. Winds will try to weaken into the night. Our winds will change gears and have a northwesterly flow during the weekend. This will allow cooler conditions and rain to transition into light snow to start the weekend and lasting into the early portions of next week. Most of the area will only see trace to one inch of snowfall at best. As we head into northern Fayette county, 1-3 inches of snowfall is expected. Western Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties we could see anywhere from 2-4" with locally higher amounts possible.
