We’re going to know the results of early voting for the upcoming election within a half hour of the polls closing at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, but new this year is the number of ballots that will be behind those counts.
Two big factors will make the early returns in San Diego County more complete than in years past.
New laws mean mail ballots were sent out to every registered voter in California, and county registrars no longer have to wait until two weeks before the election to start tabulating returned ballots.

Plus, San Diego County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu said there’s another reason results will come in more quickly this time, four super polling locations open for in-person voting.
“These locations will be open for a three day period prior to election day and so we’ll be able to actually scan in those ballots too in advance of the close of the polls,” Vu said.
Vu said, as of Saturday, more than 36% or 706,000 ballots had already been returned.
On a percentage basis, in 2016 at this time, his office had 272,000, or 24% of ballots returned.
