PICKS FROM JOE’S: Too Damn Many Games-oklahoma-state-big-12 - Cowboys Ride For Free

We survived Week 1 of the 2021 Big 12 season with a number of lows and a few highs, AND….

Covid gave us our first taste of roster juggling, right out of the gate.

OU gave us their usual, once-a-season half-ass effort, Texas is back (again), Kansas State played up as I predicted, and Oklahoma State did exactly the opposite of what Gundy predicted.

Anyway, I’m already tired of having to preview ten freaking games every week until conference play starts, so let’s get to it…

Kansas at #17 Coastal Carolina (Friday, 7:30pm ET on ESPN2)
CC -26.5
O/U 52

Kansas managed to defend its honor, albeit with a last-second TD vs South Dakota. Despite that, I'm still a bit surprised at how much Coastal Carolina is favored despite lathering up Citadel last week. A Chanticleer is clearly a more highly regarded bird than a Jayhawk. Not sure about laying the points, but that O/U feels high even for a Friday night high school game, which this is. This is now my fourth sentence about this contest, which is three sentences too many.

The remainder of the games are Saturday….

California at TCU (3:30pm ET on ESPNU)
TCU -11.5
O/U 48

Over-under feels low and the spread feels odd. Nothing about last week tells us much with TCU beating up on somebody I didn't even know had a football team, and California lost a close game to Nevada who is generally not a complete slouch. I'm thinking the Bears might pull off the upset here, but who the hell knows, teams can be so schizophrenic the first two weeks of the season. I'll go with the over and take the points.

See what I did there.....

#10 Iowa at #9 Iowa State (4:30pm ET on ABC)
Iowa St – 4.5
O/U 46

I wish I could say I was more excited about this early season top 10 match-up, but this has defensive grinder written all over it. Basically a preview of what Bedlam will become (a non-conference game) in a couple of seasons. Cyclones need to get off the schneid in this series but didn't do anything last week to really warrant the spread. I'd pick the Hawkeyes all day for the outright win and take the under, which means the Cyclones probably win in a high-scoring blowout.

Long Island University at West Virginia (5pm ET on ESPN+)
No line on ESPN at time of writing

What a soft reentry for the Mountaineers after looking only slightly more potent on offense than Oklahoma State last week. Trump University would have a better chance in this game.

Western Carolina at #4 Oklahoma (7pm ET, no TV listed)
No line on ESPN at time of writing

Good thing the Sooners get a home game after that rough road performance last week.

#15 Texas at Arkansas (7pm ET on ESPN)
Texas -7
O/U 56

OMG this game will either be a dream or a nightmare. If the Hogs can do us a huge solid this would be one of the most glorious moments in Longhorn mediocrity ever. However, if Texas takes care of business we're going to have to listen to "it" enough we might all jump off a cliff. I think Arkansas covers and I'm taking the over. Despite the Iowa - Iowa State match-up, this will be the marquee game of the day for the Big 12.

Texas Southern at Baylor (7pm ET on ESPN+)
No line on ESPN at time of writing

Southern Illinois at Kansas State (7pm ET on ESPN+)
No line on ESPN at time of writing

Kansas State will somehow manage to make everyone start wondering how bad Stanford must be.

Stephen F. Austin at Texas Tech (7pm ET on ESPN+)
No line on ESPN at time of writing

FINALLY I GET TO A GAME THAT IS WORTH TALKING ABOUT....

Tulsa at Oklahoma State (12pm ET on FS1)
OSU -13.0
O/U 52

I don't hesitate to say that after watching that disgusting offensive display last week, not to mention giving that FCS squad a chance to win, I'm going with Tulsa to at least cover, and I think they have a better than average chance to win if OSU's offensive line continues to be, well, offensive. Spencer Sanders is back so a large portion of the Cowboys fanbase is expecting miracles. It will be a miracle if Sanders isn't running for his life and manages not to get dinged up like last season. I also like the under. Oklahoma State's defense is good, but I fully expect Gundy to let them keep trotting out there because honestly, that is likely the only way OSU wins. Of course now they will probably win running away, so you can thank me for that later...

It’s a full day of action although a lot of the games don’t qualify as “action” but enjoy anyway.

GO POKES!!!
