It’s easy to stay inside and hunker down for the winter months. But even when you’d rather stay indoors, Sheridan has plenty going on. Here’s a list of things and groups to get involved with, whether you’re looking to get out of the house — or not.

The rec district offers two adult winter programs: women’s volleyball and men’s basketball. The rec district also hosts a series of 5K races during the fall and winter months. Whether looking to join a team — or coach one — the rec district always needs volunteers.

Exercise at the Y with a membership or one-day pass. The Y runs myriad fall and winter classes, which you can participate in or help teach. In the winter, pickleball open play moves inside, too. If you’re looking for something non-physical, the YMCA kicks off its annual Give Your Heart to a Child campaign, which raises money and creates scholarship opportunities for low-income youth, families and seniors.

The Lions Club hosts two meetings a month and organizes the Wreaths Across America campaign, which runs until December. For the campaign, the club sells wreaths to be placed on veterans’ graves each December in honor of their service to our country.
The United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees) is a nonprofit organization for people ages 18-40, giving them “the tools they need to build the bridges of success,” according to the organization’s website. The Jaycees meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month and offer opportunities like CPR classes and an annual Christmas Shopping Tour for local kids.

The Hub on Smith offers a little bit of everything, from exercise classes to coffee socials. It also has many volunteer opportunities at Urban Thrift, Grab and Go coffee and sandwich shop and for its Home-Delivered Meal program.

The Sheridan Knights of Columbus aid organizations like Holy Name Parish and Catholic School, Legacy Pregnancy Center and the Keeping Christ in Christmas Awareness campaign. They also hold meetings twice a month and run weekly Monday bingo nights at the Knights Hall.

Local libraries in Sheridan, Ranchester, Story and Clearmont features adult book clubs and story and craft times for children of all ages.

The Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area gives private, semi-private and group ski lessons. The nonprofit also is looking for volunteers for positions like lift attendant and snowsports instructor.
Sheridan’s Rotary Club offers opportunities to volunteer and serve the community but also connects professionals and supports causes around the globe. The group gathers every other Thursday at noon at the Holiday Inn. Other events throughout the year include an ice fishing derby, Black Tie Bingo, a golf tournament and more.

In addition to plentiful exercise programs, the Tongue River Valley Community Center with locations in Dayton and Ranchester, hosts events like billiards tournaments, community 5K series, card games and blood drives. It also has plenty of activities for kids and families.
