Before he became a mob boss, Tony Soprano was just another troubled teenager in Newark, New Jersey. The iconic character's early life is chronicled in "The Many Saints of Newark," a new movie now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.

A prequel to HBO's "The Sopranos," the movie features Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano navigating family responsibilities and racial tensions in Newark. Mentored by his uncle Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola) through the '60s and '70s, Tony begins his fateful transformation into a mob leader. Star Michael Gandolfini steps into the role first made famous by his late father, James Gandolfini.

"The Sopranos" originally aired from 1999 to 2007 on HBO and won the Emmy award for outstanding drama two times. Receiving generally favorable reviews from critics, "The Many Saints of Newark" currently holds a "73% Fresh" rating on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
