How many more horror stories before state leaders fix insane bail 'reforms'? - New York Post

Maybe Brick Man will change the minds of the New York leaders now refusing to fix the state’s woebegotten “bail reforms.”

Cops gave ex-con Anthony Manson the nickname for his alleged use of bricks to commit burglaries. He was arrested Tuesday for the fourth time in under a month, charged with burglarizing a construction site.

After each of the first three arrests, he soon walked free thanks to the 2019 reforms — only to be nabbed again soon for fresh offenses. On Dec. 23, cops busted him for three burglaries, hauled him in for two more break-ins Jan. 3 — then caught him allegedly smashing a store’s door two weeks later.

Brick Man has been arrested 75 times, sources say. Yet he can’t be locked up until he’s convicted and sentenced, which could take years.

Other winners of the catch-and-release policy have been more violent. Eugene Webb went free after allegedly beating up two women, one of whom lost a tooth. Tiffany Harris dodged bail after allegedly striking three Jewish women and yelling, “F-U, Jews” — and was nabbed again the next day in yet another attack. And freed again.

The public has noticed: Tuesday’s Siena poll showed that even progressives aren’t wild about assaulters, burglars, bank robbers and other criminals roaming the streets without even having to post bail.

The poll cited a stunning 29-point swing, from 55-38 percent in favor of the reforms last April to 49-37 percent against now. Support plunged in every demographic group and in both the city and upstate.

Yet Gov. Andrew Cuomo won’t say how he’d fix things or push for rapid legislation. Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins only supports small tweaks; Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie refuses to lift a finger.

Blame them all — and every member of the Senate and Assembly who backs them — for this insanity.
