As the coronavirus outbreak spreads and the number of Covid-19 cases spikes, local and federal government officials are stepping up actions to contain the spread of the virus.

Here’s a closer look at the numbers driving the story:

According to the latest Sunday from The Associated Press, more than 156,000 people have been infected. In addition, an estimated 74,000 people have recovered from the coronavirus. Other estimates placed the number of infected individuals north of 162,000 Sunday evening.

According to a website maintained byJohns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering, there are 3,244 confirmed cases in the United States as of Sunday evening. These countries have more: China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Germany and France.

Speaking at a White House press briefing Sunday night, Dr. Deborah Birx of White House Coronavirus Task Force, said, “We are going to see a spike (in cases) as we make more tests available.”

The number of deaths attributed to the coronavirus now exceeds 5,800, according to The Associated Press. Other estimates placed the number between 6,000 and 6,500 Sunday evening. In Spain, officials said the number of deaths more than doubled in one day, from 136 to 288. Here in the United States, there have been 62 deaths. Washington state has registered 40 of those deaths.

According to the state, there are now 98 confirmed cases, although that number is fluid and doesn’t always match reports coming from local communities and county officials. There have been two deaths in New Jersey.

How does New Jersey compare with the rest of the United States?

New York state (729), Washington state (642) and California (374) have far more cases than any another state.

Which areas of New Jersey have been hit the hardest by the coronavirus?

Bergen County, with 29 confirmed cases according to the state, has the most cases in New Jersey. Monmouth (12), Middlesex (12), Essex (11) and Hudson (11) follow.
