Letter: Socialism measures success by how many people are on welfare - INFORUM

The letter from Arnold Jordheim, “Don’t believe the socialism scare tactics,” published Feb 26 is deceptive and merits a rebuttal. Jordheim says socialism “employs good social programs to soften the hard edge of capitalism.” The programs would be “paid for by an enlightened tax policy.” I don’t believe in "scare tactics," but there is reason to be concerned. I think we are in for a philosophical battle for the very soul of America.

The Democratic Party and socialism are united in their effort to fundamentally change America. Their socialistic vision for America includes the Green New Deal, Medicare for all, single-payer, nationalized health care and free college. These government programs are costly and unsustainable and they would require a massive bureaucracy. They would be paid for by “enlightened” middle class taxpayers. I believe these socialistic policies would harm the middle class and the poor the most – in my opinion, the soul of America.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. and the current front runner, is a self-described “democratic socialist.” He has attracted many young voters by demonizing the wealthy and blaming them for income inequality and for not paying their fair share in taxes. He is deceiving voters with a false perception that economic output is fixed, when in reality; it is dynamic and ever-expanding. When our economy grows, everyone has the opportunity to earn a share of it. It’s what makes America great.

Socialism does not generate wealth; it only redistributes the wealth our free-market capitalism creates. Socialism measures success by how many people are on welfare; free-market capitalism measures success by how many people are liberated from welfare.

Biblically speaking, the redistribution of income and wealth is stealing which is against the seventh commandment; coveting our neighbor’s goods is against the tenth commandment. Constitutionally speaking, socialism violates our nation’s founding principles. The Constitution was established to protect our God-given rights and protect us from government itself. Socialism considers our Constitution irrelevant and therefore should be illegal in America.

Americans today have more affluence, more opportunity, better health and health care and more freedom than anywhere in the world. The US Treasury has reported 7 million jobs have been created since President Trump was elected. More jobs provide the poor with more opportunities to help themselves and decrease their dependence on government.

The social democracy promoted by the Democratic Party would dampen the American spirit and weaken our soul. And it would destroy the American dream. Dreaming and achieving that dream is what defines our great country. We have a responsibility as Americans to pass the dream on to our kids and grandkids.
