DOVER, De. - As the coronavirus continues to spread both internationally and domestically, many people are putting their travel plans on hold.
Angela Armutcu has been a travel agent in Delaware for 15 years, and has been busy fielding calls from clients re-booking trips due to fears of the coronavirus.
"Nobody wants anybody to go into harms way, none of us want anyone to get sick, and nobody wants anybody to travel with fear," explained Armutcu, who owns Jetset Travel in Dover.
Armutcu told WBOC many clients book trips long in advance, and the spread of the virus has caused people to reconsider their travel plans.
"I recently had a honeymoon couple that was scheduled to go to Milan on Wednesday. And unfortunately, based on the situation, in that area, they asked me what could we do instead, and I revamped them to Rome, the Amalfi Coast, and Florence. And they're there now, and they were very happy to be able to do that," she said. "There are at this point no cases in that region of Italy."
During her career in the travel industry, Armutcu has also worked in New York City. In the aftermath of 9/11, she said many people were afraid to fly after the terror attacks. She said that fear lessens as time passes, but the travel industry takes a hit when global events like the coronavirus instills fear in travelers.
"We did come over it, we've kind of passed that. We've been through the Zika, the Swine Flu, we've been through SARS, I mean there's been several things that have impacted people's lives, and their vacations and their travel for the last 20 some odd years," said Armutcu.
While Armutcu says no one should travel with fear at the forefront of their minds, she wants people to know that traveling to other destinations not on the State Department's high risk list.
"It's scaring people from going from here to Florida, to California, to the Caribbean, and so many places are very very safe, yet that mindset is there, and we certainly understand it. I mean my goal is to make people comfortable, and safe, and possibly re-book their trip at a future date," she said. "There are a lot of destinations that are very safe right now that people can still travel."
While most travel insurance does not cover an epidemic, Armutcu says she is working to get her customers their money back if they wish to postpone their travels.
