Many local stores hiring amid pandemic - News from southeastern Connecticut - theday.com

With millions of laid-off Americans struggling financially during the COVID-19 pandemic, many find themselves looking for new jobs or part-time work to supplement their income until they can safely return to their previous jobs.

Many companies are hiring "seasonal" employees to help with a rush of customers as shoppers flood stores to stock up on paper goods, cleaning supplies and groceries.

In southeastern Connecticut, here's who's hiring:

Walmart

In response to an increase in shoppers during the COVID-19 pandemic Walmart recently committed to hiring 50,000 new associates to work through the end of May at stores, clubs, distribution centers and fulfillment centers nationwide after hiring 100,000 new associates in just a few weeks, according to Hannah Walford, a spokesperson for the retail giant.

In Connecticut, there are roughly 1,275 openings within the Walmart company, including at the Waterford and Groton stores.

Electric Boat

Electric Boat is continuing to hire for several hundred openings, including in the engineering, operations, production and support departments, according to EB spokesperson Elizabeth Power.

"We are continuing to actively recruit and hire and we are holding interviews for the most part over the phone," said Power.

In most cases, new hires are being scheduled to start at the end of May, but those being hired for critical roles are being on-boarded immediately in small numbers, Power said.

Stop & Shop

Stop & Shop is looking to hire hundreds of part-time workers across Connecticut "as a result of COVID-19 and increased customer demand," according to Stop & Shop spokesperson Maura O'Brien.

The grocery store chain is accepting applications for all shifts and positions, including roles at the Waterford, Groton and East Lyme stores.

Store managers and hiring staff are remaining aware of important health and safety measures during the hiring process.  "Our interviews, hiring and training programs have all been adjusted to ensure adherence with necessary social distancing measures," said O'Brien.
