Many of our neighbors need help during this coronavirus crisis - Greenwich Time

Updated

No one knows what the total economic impact will be from the spread of the coronavirus, but many of our neighbors are feeling the sting from the lost income.

Nearly one out of every four adults in the state is out of work, with steep job losses among health aides for the elderly, gym employees, restaurant servers, and childcare workers — among many others.

And many bills are now coming due as we approach May.

Help-A-Neighbor, a new emergency drive, was created to help residents who cannot pay their basic expenses: rent, food and utilities.

The Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Time worked with Family Centers, Person-to-Person, Domus, and Building One Community to create and administer this fund.

In the weeks to come, we will publish stories about neighbors in crisis. Included with each story will be an estimated dollar amount to meet their needs. The four nonprofit agencies — which serve some of the most vulnerable members of our community — will channel 100 percent of donations to the clients.

Family Centers provides human service programs to more than 20,000 residents in Stamford, Greenwich, New Canaan and Darien.

Person-to-Person serves those communities as well as Norwalk, Wilton, Weston, and Westport. Among other things, it provides food and clothing to families in need.

Domus provides services for at-risk youth, and Building One Community delivers assistance to immigrants. Both are based in Stamford.

Here are the stories of some of our neighbors in need:

Case No. 76 — Mary, a single mom with three children, worked at a cleaning company until the coronavirus pandemic. Now she is unsure when she will be able to return to work. Mary has a very high balance with her utilities and has been struggling to make payments. A grant of $500 would help Mary set up a budget payment plan, so that when this pandemic ends, she is not hit with an automatic shutoff notice.

Case No. 77 — Kelly, a single mom with a young daughter, recently lost her job as a server at a restaurant due to the coronavirus. She is undocumented and therefore will not receive a government stimulus check or be able to apply for unemployment. Kelly is scared and worried about how she will pay her bills. A grant of $1,000 would allow her to pay her rent and remain in her home with her daughter.

Case No. 78 — Julie, a single mother of an autistic child, has been working hard to keep food on the table for herself and her son. Now with the coronavirus pandemic, Julie’s employer is shut down, She will not receive a paycheck until further notice and is unable to collect unemployment. A grant of $500 would allow her to keep a roof over her head, while she cares for her son.

Case No. 79 — Even before the coronavirus arrived, Josefina’s kids were sick. Every month she had to take one of her kids to the ER with some type of flu. When the coronavirus arrived in Connecticut, Josefina had to make the decision to leave her job or risk bringing the virus to her family. As a devoted mother of three, the choice to leave was easy. But that will have an impact on her family, because she has no income coming in. Josefina is worried that this crisis will go on for longer than she can afford to stay out of work. A grant of $500 would help make up for her lost income during this pandemic.

Case No. 80 — Jessenia, who was born with sickle cell, has struggled with the symptoms and made lifestyle changes to alleviate some of the pain and discomfort. Now the coronavirus has brought new challenges to Jessenia: She had to stop working, because she is a very high-risk person. She is afraid to go outside to get food or visit the doctor for her check-ups. On top of her medical condition, Jessenia is concerned about how she will pay her rent and her monthly utilities. A grant of $500 would help cover her bills.
